What are Altcoins?

Bitcoin is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency. *Altcoins* simply means all other cryptocurrencies besides Bitcoin. Examples include Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, and thousands more. Trading altcoin futures allows you to speculate on the price movements of these other cryptocurrencies without actually owning them.

Understanding Key Terms

**Long:** Betting the price will *increase*. You *buy* a futures contract if you think the price will go up.

The price of ETH increases by 10%.
Your profit is $50 (10% of $500).
However, if the price dropped by 20%, you would have lost $100 (20% of $500) – wiping out your initial deposit and potentially triggering liquidation.
